Fagunwa Day is an initiative of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers toward educating, informing and restoring the glories of Yoruba Culture, Language, Literature and Norms. It is also an avenue where upcoming writers and students can test their abilities in the use of their indigenous language.

This year event is the fourth of its kind and your school is cordially invited to participate.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF FAGUNWA DAY

  1. To promote Late D.O. Fagunwa Works
  2. To test the ability of invited schools and students in the use of our local language (Yoruba)
  3. To promote Yoruba Language and Literature

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOUR STUDENTS

  1. Writing Contest – mainly on prose, poetry and drama in Yoruba Language
  2. Spelling Bee Contest in Yoruba – All the works of the late sage (D.O. Fagunwa) shall be used to test your student’s ability on pronunciation and word spellings in Yoruba.
  3. Reading Contest – Your students shall read from the works of the Late Novelist.

PA SAMUEL AND ABIMBOLA ABIOLA WRITING CONTEST

PA SAMUEL AND ABIMBOLA ABIOLA WRITING CONTEST

(In honor and memory of the Late Pa Samuel Adigun Oladimeji Abiola and Abimbola Joan Abiola)

(For young people between the ages of 16 and 35)

LATE PA SAMUEL ADIGUN OLADIMEJI ABIOLA – an economist, political scientist, scholar, philosopher and business entrepreneur. He was a native of Oyo and an erudite scholar during his lifetime. In a bid to immortalize and remember his past works and achievements, SAMUEL ADIGUN AND JOAN ABIMBOLA ABIOLA FOUNDATION was established.

JOAN ABIMBOLA ABIOLA – a Teacher, Bible Scholar and an evangelist. She was a graduate of International Relations from the prestigious university of Ife. Before her death, she was the headmistress of a prestigious nursery and primary school in Osogbo City, Osun State.

THEME OF THE WRITING CONTEST – BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL

  • Entries must be written in English and be the original work of the Writer
  • Participants are encouraged to be creative in their response
  • Entries can be submitted in number of formats, for example: poem, short story, script or essay
  • Multiple submissions are not allowed and will lead to disqualification.
  • Entry closes March 31, 2015
  • Submissions should be sent to societyofyoungnigerianwriters@gmail.com and woleadedoyin@gmail.com

NOTES FOR GUIDANCE

  • Entries must be the original work of the writer. This does not rule out input or assistance from others
  • Entries must correspond to the topic

PRIZES TO BE WON:

1st Prize – N10,000 + Certificate of Participation and Certificate of Achievement

2nd Prize – N7,000 + Certificate of Participation and Certificate of Achievement

3rd Prize – N5,000 + Certificate of Participation and Certificate of Achievement

It is also a platform where writers and illustrators of children literature meet to brainstorm, discuss, share ideas and disseminates useful information on their fields of interest.

Our mission is to advance the production of children’s books in Nigeria.
